2010 ALA Community Challenge

Please mark your calendars for this year’s ALA Community Challenge, which will again be held at the St. Vincent de Paul Dining Room.

What: Serve lunch to low-income and homeless individuals

When: Friday, October 8, 2010, 11:00 am to 1:00 pm (please be onsite at 11:00 am)

Where: St. Vincent de Paul Dining Room, 437 West 200 South, Salt Lake City, UT 84101

Parking: Available next to facility, just past the gates

TRAX stop: 500 West on 200 South

Notes: Open-toed shoes are not permitted and long hair must be tied back.

Scott Mecham will solicit reservations in early October so we can provide a participation count. UALA also encourages personal donations of $25 (roughly the cost of three lunches) and/or donations from your respective firms of $100 to $500. Please make checks to St. Vincent de Paul Dining Room and bring with you on October 8, or mail the check if you are unable to attend the event.

2009 Community Challege

On Friday, October 16, 2009, several members of the Utah Association of Legal Administrators (UALA) participated in ALA’s Community Challenge Weekend by serving lunch to those in need at the St. Vincent de Paul Dining Room near downtown Salt Lake City. It was a gratifying way to provide charitable service and to work shoulder to shoulder with fellow chapter members and those who operate this exceptional facility. Special thanks to Mark Hall, UALA past president, for coordinating this service activity.

Utah ALA Community Challenge

Join us on Friday October 16th from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. as we serve lunch at the St. Vincent DePaul Dining Room (437 West 200 South). Please arrive by 11:00 a.m. so that at 11:15 a.m. we will be ready to start serving lunch. Parking is available on-site, just drive past the gates. PLEASE NOTE: Long hair should be tied back and no open toed shoes.

This is a worthy cause and meets the needs of over 25,000 individuals each year. Please consider making a personal donation of $25 (roughly the cost of 3 lunches) to support Catholic Community Services in providing this important service. Funds are tight right now for each of us and our law firms are also feeling the pinch. The low-income and homeless individuals and families served by this group are feeling the current recession harder than many of us are. You can make a donation even if you are unable to attend the event. As appropriate, you may also wish to invite your firm to participate with a small donation.

2008 Community Challege

This year marked ALA’s tenth annual Community Challenge Weekend. The Utah chapter once again provided service and donations for the Guadalupe School for Underprivileged Children. On Friday, October 24, 2008, ten chapter members spent the afternoon at the school helping teachers with various projects. Twelve firms collectively donated 300 books and $4,000 for the purchase of school supplies. The event provided a great opportunity for chapter members to render service to a worthy cause and to become better acquainted with one another. Thanks to everyone who participated and contributed, and special thanks to Kevin Pollei of Parsons Behle & Latimer for organizing this event for a second consecutive year.

2007 Community Challege

The Community Challenge on Friday, October 26, at the Guadalupe School was a big success. Eighteen chapter members provided much needed service by binding books, repairing gates, installing shelving, dismantling and moving furniture, sorting and organizing books, decorating for Halloween and assisting teachers with other classroom projects. School administrators and teachers were grateful for the service rendered and the over $2,000 and 200+ books donated to the school. Thanks to Kevin Pollei for organizing the event and to all who participated and made donations.
