Eleven
chapter members enjoyed an excellent annual ALA
conference in beautiful
Seattle, May 5 - 8, 2008. Eric Visser
was especially involved as a member of the Vendor
Relations Committee. At our June 17 chapter lunch
meeting, some conference attendees will share
information learned at their favorite educational
sessions.

The Community
Challenge on Friday, October 26, at the Guadalupe School
was a big success. Eighteen chapter members provided
much needed service by binding books, repairing gates,
installing shelving, dismantling and moving furniture,
sorting and organizing books, decorating for Halloween
and assisting teachers with other classroom projects.
School administrators and teachers were grateful
for the service rendered and the over $2,000 and 200+
books donated to the school.
Thanks to Kevin Pollei for organizing the event
and to all who participated and made donations.
Vickie Balis and
Pam McLeese represented the chapter at the ALA Region 4
Conference in Oklahoma City. They attended excellent
sessions, including Stephen Shapiro’s sessions on
“Goal-free Living” and “SpeedInnovating: Breakthrough
Solutions at Breakneck Speed” and Jim Stowall’s
inspiring presentation: “Change Your Life by Changing
Your Mind.” Stowall is a native Oklahoman who in 1988
founded the Narrative Television Network (NTN) to make
programs and movies accessible to the blind and visually
impaired. Entertainment during the conference included
Oklahoma University students singing songs from the
Broadway musical Oklahoma, dancers adorned in full
Native American dress, guitarist Edgar Cruz, and dragon
boat racing on the Oklahoma River. Pam and Vickie also
visited the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum
built to honor victims and survivors of the 1995 bombing
of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building.
Lisa Hewitson chaired the bi-annual Chapter
Vendor Fair held September 13, 2007, at the Utah Law and Justice
Center. Fred Ball of KSL Radio’s Speaking on Business
gave a
well-received keynote address, after which chapter members enjoyed a
buffet lunch and networked with vendors. Several chapter members
received prizes provided by the 30 sponsoring vendors. Special
thanks to Lisa and the other committee members who planned and
coordinated this successful event: James Adamson, Matt Fankhauser,
Susan Fredette, Cassidy Hilton and
Scott Mecham.
I n May several chapter members attended the
ALA Annual Conference in Las Vegas. Nancy Herd, Korey Lowder
and
Lorie Springer reported on their favorite sessions at the chapter’s
June meeting. In July Natalie Gouchner of the Salt Lake Chamber of
Commerce discussed the Downtown Rising project, and in August Kai
Wilson of the Utah Legal Aid Society explained the And Justice for
All program.
On February 9, 2007, the ALA Utah-Beehive Chapter
held a 30th Anniversary Celebration with dinner and dancing at the
Grand America Hotel. Sporting 70’s attire, attendees enjoyed the
oldies by the band Crash Pontiac and the Hubcaps. Special guests included national ALA president
Richard J. “Dick” Nigon and regional officers Susan French Koran
and
Monty R. Morton. Jerry L. Brown and his wife Jane
traveled from
Scottsdale, Arizona to attend the anniversary party. Jerry was the
Utah-Beehive Chapter’s first president and served as national ALA
president in 1986-1987. He reminisced with chapter members and
guests about the law firm environment of the 1970’s and the details
of forming the chapter in 1977. Several other previous chapter
officers were in attendance, as well. Special thanks to Kevin Pollei
for planning and hosting this great event and to IKON for sponsoring
it.
